Immunity challenge in Post-Covid times

Leading ayurveda practitioners are seeing a drop in immunity after two years of the Covid pandemic, and are advising patients to take care of lifestyles to get back to better health.

Two years of Covid-induced lifestyles have led to a noticeable drop in immunity levels, primarily caused by vitamin D-3 and B-12 deficiencies, practitioners say.

“Even today there are reports about children becoming vulnerable to frequent fever due to weak immunity” said Ashtavaidyan Dr E T Neelakandhan Mooss, Managing Director of Thrissur-based Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala.

Ashtavaidyan Dr E T Yadu Narayanan Mooss, Executive Director, said good quality medicines were key to addressing immunity and general health challenges. “Quality is an integral part of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Classical Ayurvedic texts have prescribed methods to achieve this goal. Medicines manufactured at the three Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala factories undergo in-house quality control for all medicines through stringent quality checks”.

Explaining how the lifestyle change during Covid adversely affected immunity, Ashtavaidyan Dr E T Krishnan Mooss said, “Primarily there are VitD3 and B12 deficiencies. A significant drop in sun exposure, the work from home lifestyle and psychological and physical stress have all contributed to this”.

While working from home has contributed directly to a reduction in vitamin D levels, the vitamin B-12 deficiency may be associated with bad diet habits, a sedentary lifestyle and work-related stress.

“The prevalence of stress is alarming. As much as 98 per cent of patients who come to us have stress-related issues. It cuts across all age groups. There is even parental stress, regarding the learning issues of their children", he said.

Mother & Child – Post-natal care

The Vaidyaratnam Kozhikode treatment centre is making arrangements to provide complete post-natal mother and child care at the homes of clients, for convenience.

The treatment includes traditional ayurvedic post-delivery care incorporating uzhichil, facials and other scientific methods in the homely comfort of the clients. This treatment, which comes in 14, 21 and 28-day packages, is offered under the guidance of specialist lady doctors and experienced therapists. The package also includes arishtam, lehyam and other delivery-care medicines made in the ayurvedic tradition.

Along with the treatment, abdominal bandage, post-natal yoga and psychological support and counselling for issues like post-partum depression, tension and anxiety will also be available.

The Vaidyartnam treatment centre at Pushpa Junction, Kozhikode is offering the facility for scientific post-natal care at clients’ homes at a time when families are finding it difficult to get trained hands to take care of post-natal services like oil baths for mothers and children.
