Modern:
Phytochemical evaluation of Withania somnifera extracts reported that the aqueous extract contains amino acids, flavonoids and saponins. Withania may also stimulate thyroid activity indirectly, via its effect on cellular antioxidant systems.Withania extract significantly decreased lipid peroxidation in the liver homogenate and significantly increased catalase activity, promoting scavenging of free radicals that can cause cellular damage. These results indicate ashwaganda may be a useful botanical in treating hypothyroidism. Ashwagandha root extract might act both as a prothyroidic agent and as an antiperoxidative agent. Forskolin, a labdane diterpene is the main active ingredient in the Coleus forskohlii (Labatiae). Forskolin has demonstrated the ability to increase thyroid hormone production and stimulate thyroid hormone release by increasing the quantity of stimulatory guanine nucleotide-binding proteins. Guggulsterone was shown to be responsible for the thyroid stimulatory action of guggulu. Administration of isolated guggulsterone to rats led to significant increase in all thyroid function parameters, namely, uptake of iodine by the thyroid, enzymes involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, and tissue oxygen uptake, thus suggesting thyroid stimulatory action.
It also possesses antioxidant, antidepressant , neuroprotective, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic, hepatoprotective, nootropic,anti-stress, immunostimulant, immunomodulatory and antiulcer properties.
