‘Sober In Swelling’
Ardhavilwam kashaya choornam is the coarse powder form of Chukkuchundadi kashayam mentioned for sopha (swelling) in Sahasrayoga. Vilwa refers to pala which is a measurement equal to 48g. The ingredients of yoga are Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Sunti (Zingiber officinale), Kandakari (Solanum anguivi ), Apamarga (Achyranthes aspera), and Duralabha (Tragia involucrata). The specific quantity mentioned for the ingredients provides the yoga an excellent anti-inflammatory action.

Dosage:
Kashaya choornam:15g powder mixed with 1 and half litre of water and boiled and reduced to 750 ml, filter and take frequently for the whole day or as directed by the physician.
Cumulative pharmacological action of the formulation
Tridoshashamana - Rakthavikarahara - Deepana - Amapachana - Srothosodhana -Anulomana - Rakthavikarahara - Medovishoshanam - Mutra ashmarinashaka -Pandughna - Vishaghna - Rasayana.
Pharmacodynamics:
The cumulative pharmacological property reveals the yoga with Thiktha-katu-kashaya rasa, laghu-ruksha-tikhna-sara guna, ushna veerya and madhura vipaka. Ardhavilwam kashayam corrects the root cause of sopha ie agnimandya by virtue of drugs which posses ama pachana and agni deepana property. Thus annavaha udakavaha srotases are corrected. The yoga is mala vata anulomana. It clears the srotorodha in various parts of the body. Sopha involves the sanga of kapha pitha rakta in bahi siras due to the rudha gati of vata. Both the sanga of doshas and rudha vata can be corrected by this yoga. Tikta rasa possess kleda hara, visha hara properties. At the same time madhura vipaka helps relieve mala mootra sanga.
In sarvanga sopha, doshas are spread throughout the sareera. It can be seen that the drugs of Ardhavilwam kashaya choornam acts in different srotases- rasa, rakta, mamsa, medas, anna, udaka, mootra and purisha vaha. Thus this formulation gets wide range of clinical implications. The kashayam is mostly used in combination with other sophahara dravyas. Therapeutic activities of the formulation contributed by the ingredients suggest that it possess Anti-inflammatory, Antimicrobial, Diuretic, Immunostimulatory, Hepatoprotective, Antioxidant, and Anti-fibrinolytic activity.
